Proposed Gas Tax

Resolution on the Proposed Gas Tax

WHEREAS, Delaware Governor Jack Markell has promoted an increase in the Gas Tax assessed on all gasoline purchases in the State of Delaware to cover shortfalls in the State's budget.

WHEREAS, The State of Delaware does not have a revenue problem, but instead has a spending problem.

WHEREAS, Gasoline taxes are highly regressive, disproportionately impacting those least able to afford any further increases in gas prices.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That the Libertarian Party of Delaware opposes Jack Markell's proposed tax increase, and calls on the General Assembly to defeat any bills which would increase gas taxes in the state of Delaware. The General Assembly should instead focus on ways to reduce spending, for example, by eliminating wasteful corporate welfare and the bloated surveillance infrastructure of the Delaware State Police.
